Expert Advice for the Blushing Bride

Kulsum Parvez, professionally known as Kulsum, is an entrepreneur in the Makeup and Makeover world. She is not only a master of artistry in fashion, modelling and media but is also a highly sought after makeup artist in the wedding industry. With a steady hand and a sharp sense of aesthetics, Kulsum transforms brides into their most stunning avatars for their special day. We at Koskii caught up with with the diva for a tête-à-tête on tips for brides to be.

Having worked with Bibi Russell, Sanchita, Sunit Verma, Debanhams, Elle, Vogue and Chemistry to mention a few, we just couldn’t wait to get her expert advice on all the wedding dos and don’ts!

The strong, positive influence that she is, she started off with the must dos that will keep you gleaming and radiant on your special day.

Do:

Moisturize

Not only is moisturization good for your skin’s health, well hydrated skin actually holds makeup better! That’s right, dry and flakey skin will cause makeup to cake on your skin and can completely ruin the perfect look we all want on our wedding day. So remember, to avoid looking dull, moisturization is the key. If you don’t already, Kulsum suggests that you moisturize every day for at least a month before your event to achieve the best results.

Hair Spas and Oils

Consistently oil your hair and do hair spas for those perfect tresses. Just like your skin, hair needs to be hydrated in order to thrive. Olive oil is great for your hair; mix in a drop or two of warm castor oil and rub it into your scalp for thick and luxurious locks. Hair spas are wonderful as they nourish your hair from the root to the tip and leave your hair smooth with a soft finish.

Contact Lense Trials

For those of you who choose to wear coloured contacts at your event, consult your makeup artist when picking a colour. The contacts should complement your outfit and complexion, and the wrong shade could make you look washed out or unnatural. Some brides go for colours which exactly match their outfit. Keep in mind the key word here is how to complement the bride’s features, so even if the colour exactly matches the colour of your ensemble, it might not suit your complexion. So always seek the advice of your makeup artist to ensure that your contact lenses tie your whole look together rather than stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Don’t:

Try Contact Lenses at the Last Minute

Experiment earlier with contact lenses, if you try them on for the first time on your wedding day, your eyes could turn red or have an adverse reaction. Red and watery eyes will ruin your makeup and make you look tired and dull throughout your event. Make sure you have tried and tested them well in advance to avoid any issues during your event.

No More Baby Oil

Do not, I repeat, do NOT remove your makeup with baby oil! Makeup needs to be removed with proper makeup removal products like cleansers and wipes. Makeup alone does not cause acne or breakouts on your skin. Yes, makeup has chemicals in it, but the key to avoiding breakouts is proper makeup removal. Most people use baby oil to remove makeup which acts as an absorbent and could clog the pores. Use a cleanser or makeup removal wipes to remove all particulates and impurities from the skin. Even baby wipes are still too mild to get the job done, use the right products to keep your skin clean, fresh and glowing.

Special Advice:

Always listen to your makeup artist when it comes to choosing your hairstyle. “Some brides carry pictures of their favourite celebrities for reference.” Kulsum recollects, “While it is easy for me to replicate those hairstyles, it may not always suit the bride the same way it suits the celebrity.” She further advises that makeup artists choose hairstyles to complement the shape of the bride’s face and her features, along with the style of the outfit. So ladies, although you may love the new hairdo of the heroine in the latest hit film, it is always better to create a style just for yourself. After all, this occasion is all about you! So trust the expert to make you look your best.

Kulsum leaves us with these words of advice on the latest trends of the season, “Red is not the only colour for your bridal lehenga. There are many more colours in vogue which make the bride look lovely. Make your wedding ensemble you own and try pastel greens, pastel peach, pinks, golden and beige. You’ll be surprised how well these colours work so don’t be afraid to experiment!”
